The basics In 2024, we built an Olsen Fast Fire Wood Kiln at Make Waynesboro Clay Studio. This kiln can be fired in one day, unlike some other types of wood kilns. We have fired the kiln a few times, and we are seeing pots with some nice tones. This is not the kind of wood kiln that will result in lots of ash deposits. The results are a little more subtle. This is meant to be a glaze kiln with subtle wood fire hints. We’ll load on Saturday at 9:00am. Attendance encouraged for loading but not required, so long as you drop off work in advance. We’ll fire on Sunday from about 9am-5 or 6pm . Participation in firing is required. Participants do not need to have prior wood fire experience. We are happy to teach. Everyone must follow directions closely and must observe all safety instructions. More Details Pieces should be bisque-fired and glazed before the day of the workshop. Participants are responsible for bringing their work glazed and ready to fire. Participants who are not members of the studio need to glaze using their own materials, before coming to the loading. Participants are responsible for bringing work made from a clay body appropriate for cone 10 firing in a wood kiln. Each participant will get a half stack. The shelves are 16×18 and you get about 20 inches worth. Work will be spread evenly throughout the kiln to ensure everyone of kiln placement. All participants will work a kiln shift of about 2 1/2 hours. Once everyone is signed up we’ll reach out to coordinate sign up for stoking shifts. Kiln opening will likely be the following Thursday. *Please note that this workshop is limited to adults aged 18 or older.* What’s it cost? What’s the fee include? Participation is $125 per person. Discount for members. You must be signed in to receive your member discount. Includes firing a half stack of work and participating and learning about the wood fire process. Where? At the studio, outside at the wood kiln site. About the studio: Make Waynesboro Clay Studio is operated by Jake Johnson Ceramics LLC.
