Shenandoah Valley Art Center presents The Ancient Art of Raku Ceramics with Lynn Hilton Conyers! This three-day workshop for adults will allow you to Immerse yourself in the fast firing techniques and traditions that began in Japan in the 16th century. The dramatic, fast-paced process involves removing the red-hot pieces from the kiln, placing them into a reduction chamber that results in metallic lusters, vibrant colors and crackle patterns in the glazes. A class that is perfect for all skill levels, students will receive instruction in hand-building, wheel throwing, glazing, and firing techniques as appropriate to individual needs. Independent workers are also welcome! Conyers, a graduate of VCU in Art Education and JMU with an MFA in Ceramics, is an award winning ceramic artist who has spent a career teaching her craft at high schools, universities, art centers, and her private studio, Windtuck Pottery. (Wet work: June 12, glazing: June 18, firing: June 19, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., $185, all materials provided, students need to pack a lunch, location: Windtuck Pottery, 1205 Mt.
